UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY
I believe that anxiety is a part of you but it need not define you. Everyone experiences anxiety. It is an emotion that exists within all of us. However, there are times when your anxiety may interfere with how you live your life. Sometimes your anxiety might be correlated to changes occurring in your life, or sometimes it might be influenced by your past or fears around the future.
Anxiety can be understood on a spectrum. On one end, you may experience general worry which does not interfere with your life and on the other end you may experience panic, a feeling of intense anxiety, fear, and a sense of impending doom. And in between lies an array of feelings like: overwhelm, alienation, insecurity, embarrassment, fear…
TYPES OF ANXIETY:
EXCESSIVE AND PERSISTENT WORRY about routine events of life that is not in proportion to the situation.
PANIC: Episodes of intense anxiety/fear usually accompanied by physical symptoms such as: chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and/or a racing/pounding heart.
SOCIAL ANXIETY: Avoiding social situations out of a fear of embarrassment and being judged by others.
ECO-ANXIETY: “The chronic fear of environmental cataclysm that comes from observing the seemingly irrevocable impact of climate change and the associated concern for one’s future and that of next generations.” - American Psychological Association
PHOBIAS: An intense or irrational fear of or aversion to something, often leading to avoidance of a feared object, situation or activity.
